Egyptian Accordionist, composer, songwriter, singer and actress Youssra El Hawary (Egypt) studied piano and music theory. She has been part of the Al Tamye Theatre Group as an actress and singer since 2007, a group which “seeks alternative means of expressing the Arab human mind and heart” and The Choir Project since 2010 which “invites people from all walks of life to put their hopes and concerns, their feelings and thoughts, their jokes and woes into song”. Youssra El Hawary released her Fair Play winning video ‘El Soor (The Wall)’ in April 2012, with its lyrics by political cartoonist and poet Waleed Taher. El Soor features Youssra El Hawary in front of a graffiti covered wall, one of the many erected by the army to block the passage between Muhammad Mahmoud street and Tahrir Square and downtown Cairo. The humoristic style of El Hawary’s approach exemplifies the strength of young revolutionaries in Egypt and around the world, who refuse to be intimidated and defeated by obstacles placed in their paths.

SIMPONI (Music Syndicate of Earth Dwellers / Sindikat Musik Penghuni Bumi) is a band & youth community based in Jakarta Indonesia, combining social education with art, especially music. The band actively tours and performs in schools, to discuss with youth on various issues including global warming and corruption. The band’s Fair Play winning video ‘Vonis’ highlights the conflict Indonesian youth face in being torn between two historical realities: a patriotic history of Indonesia’s young founding fathers and mothers, and the contemporary reality of corrupt politicians and officials eroding the people’s promise in the future. Within this context, Vonis serves as a call for unity and action: “We are making a movement / We are not a silent generation / Share your wild imagination / We are building a revolution”.

S3 is a rapper and social justice activist based in Goma, DR Congo, which is situated at the feet of the volcano Nyiragongo on the border with Rwanda. S3 has stated that his biggest dream is to contribute to unity “I would like to have my voice heard beyond our borders and to have my message of peace heard by all - to fight against the tribalism and discrimination that dominates the world and the great lakes region in particular”. His Fair Play winning video ‘Conscience’ speaks about how international interests in the resources of DR Congo are protected above the interests and human rights of civilians, highlighting the hypocrisy of foreign policy and aid, and calling for global awareness and consciousness.
